<image:title>Projects - Devil's Promenade</image:title>
<image:caption>A collaborative project by Antone Dolezal & Lara Shipley The Ozark backwoods are a place you feel. The dark nooks to hide, made in encroaching woods and the banks of rivers, the smell of wet life and decay, a steady insect hum, all create a backdrop for a people with a particular fascination for the mysteries of darkness and light. Here some of the oldest stories of humanity are told—wanderers’ lost souls and paths taken towards good or evil—but with a local twist in the tale of a strange orb of light. Folkloric stories can provide insight into very real issues in a community. This region is marked by isolated poverty, a wariness of outsiders, and a struggle between heaven and hell that factors into everyday conversation. The Ozark Light is known as a floating orb found on a wooded road in a region where the Devil is said to reside. In lieu of a scientific explanation the appearance of the Light has come to represent for the community a desire for redemption and the fear of slipping into darkness. It is the sublime experience whose defiance of explanation provides a reprieve from ordinary life while the stories told to explain its origin are firmly rooted in the foundation of human existence. Devil’s Promenade is in part a project about returning to the place we grew up. This work blends folklore and local history with present day photographs of Ozark people, the land, spiritual gatherings, and interpretive images based on the region's rich storytelling traditions. These photographs are combined with oral accounts, interpretive fiction, and archival photographs from the region’s past. Our aim is not to provide documentation or an explanation of the phenomenon, but to suggest a narrative that, in the spirit of the Light, is part fixed in this unique region and part afloat in a mysterious, otherworldly realm. <image:title>Projects - The Naked Truth</image:title>
<image:caption>A collaborative project by Antone Dolezal & Lara Shipley The Naked Truth is set in the Victorian spa town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a place founded on the desire for magical healing. During the Great Depression, in the height of economic despair, a stranger promised to bring salvation in the form of an empty hotel, converted to a cancer curing hospital. Only the man was not a doctor, and his trademark cure, Formula #5, could not heal. The story of the valley town is not unusual. Opportunities have always lay waiting in desperation for those without the moral qualms to resist. We recognized in this history parallels with America today; a place that continues to suffer from economic instability, questionable truths driving political discourse, and dangerous magical thinking that offers easy solutions to complex realities. Inspired by superstition, the story of a trickster that is part truth and part myth, and a hotel that was once the illusion of a hospital, The Naked Truth explores the fine line between reality and illusion that can be used to marvel or exploit. It aims to challenge our faith in manufactured saviors and the evidence we employ to make sense of the world. By giving a glimpse into this small corner of America’s past, we seek to unveil a world that exposes the wonder, trauma and eccentric realities reverberating across contemporary America today. <image:title>Projects - Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit</image:title>
<image:caption>The Western United States possesses a strange tale of European settlers seeking a utopian future. For those who aspire for divine knowledge it’s a place that holds the key to the mysteries of the cosmos. Luminous globes falling in arcs from the night sky, giant craters in the earth, relentless wildfires and unidentified radio signals all create fertile ground for conspiracy and myth to take root. Here beliefs both old and new intertwine, creating a realm where the magical and the ordinary are one and the same. This work focuses on new religious movements of the region and the beliefs to which they adhere. Influenced by folklore of the American West, Sci-Fi cinema, secret military programs and the appropriation of Indigenous spiritual practices, the religious faiths I follow form a complex and entangled story. A story of American utopia that is grand in vision, yet historically rooted in the expression of Western Imperialism. Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit points to the inherent human need for communal belief, yet aims to critically examine the propensity towards magical thinking. Through the layering of photographic and textual materials, this work examines the evolution of American mythmaking while drawing parallels with modern-day conspiracy theories and the cultivation of American prophets.</image:caption>
